In the next year, the emperor praised them and bestowed them his own writing of eight characters meaning, “A stele honoring the Onyang Yi Clan passing down filial piety.” Receiving this, the scholars inscribed the emperor’s writing on a stone stele and built a pavilion.

해설문

국문

온양이씨 어필각은 순종의 어필을 새긴 어필비를 보호하기 위해 세운 건물이다. 1924년 금산 지방의 유림들이 온양이씨 문중의 5세 3효*의 효를 널리 알리는 글을 조정에 올리자 1925년 3월에 순종이 ‘온양이씨계효지비(溫陽李氏繼孝之碑)’라는 어필(御筆)을 내렸다. 이에 유림과 온양이씨 후손들이 순종의 어필을 비석에 새겨 그 뜻을 기렸다.

순종이 세상을 떠난 후 온양이씨 문중에서는 황제의 은덕을 기리기 위해 숭봉전을 세우고 순종의 얼굴을 그린 어진(御眞)과 함께 한말에 순절한 충신들의 영정을 모시고 봄과 가을에 제향을 올렸다. 이에 의친왕(義親王)은 ‘온양이씨삼효문’과 영모당의 액자를 내렸다. 그러나 1943년 일제 강점기 당시 금산경찰서장이던 일본인 석천도부가 숭봉전을 칠백의총과 함께 강제 철거하여 그 목재를 현재 금산읍사무소 뒤에 있는 태고종에 팔아넘겼다.

어필각 앞에는 1927년에 세워진 하마비**가 있다. 원래는 금계초등학교 앞에 있었는데 도로가 새로 생기면서 지금의 위치로 옮겼다고 한다. 현재 어필각 옆 하마비 위쪽 빈터가 숭봉전의 자리이다.

어필각은 팔각형의 겹집 모양으로 지어졌는데 현존하는 건물로는 우리나라 다섯 번째 규모의 모임지붕***이다. 팔각형 모양의 장초석 위에 둥근 기둥을 세워 어필각을 지었으며 주위에 돌담을 둘렀다.

  • 하마비: 그 앞을 지날 때 말에서 내리라는 뜻을 새기어 문묘 앞에 세웠던 비석
  • 모임지붕: 사각뿔이나 육각뿔처럼 용마루 없이 하나의 꼭짓점에서 만나는 지붕

이 건물은 대한제국 시기인 20세기 초, 순종(재위 1907-1910)의 글씨를 새긴 비석을 보호하기 위해 세운 비각이다.

1924년 이 지방의 유림들이 온양이씨 문중의 세 사람(이태귀, 이원배, 이흥엽)의 효행을 널리 알리는 글을 조정에 올렸다. 이듬해 순종황제가 이를 칭송하여 ‘온양이씨계효지비(溫陽李氏繼孝之碑)’라는 여덟 글자를 직접 써서 내렸다. 이에 유림과 후손들이 이를 비석에 새기고 전각을 지어 그 뜻을 기렸다.

어필각 앞에는 1927년에 세워진 하마비가 있다. 황제가 쓴 글씨가 있는 곳이므로 말에서 내려 예의를 표해야 함을 알리는 비이다.
