괘불탱은 야외에서 열리는 불교 의식에 사용되는 대형 불화이다. 용문사 영산회 괘불탱은 석가모니의 영축산 설법 모임인 영산회를 형상화 한 것이다.

용문사 영산회 괘불탱은 괘불탱으로서는 비교적 빠른 시기인 조선 숙종 31년(1705)에 만들어졌다. 불화의 전체 크기는 가로 6.936m, 세로 10.045m이며, 본존불의 머리 높이는 1.8m, 광배(光背)*의 폭이 2.7m에 이른다. 그림 아래쪽의 중앙에는 왕실의 안위를 비는 글이 있으며, 테두리 아래쪽의 끝부분에는 화기(畵記)*가 있다.
