해설문

국문

예천권씨 초간공파 종택은 초간 권문해權文海, 1534~1591의 할아버지 권오상權五常이 조선 선조 22년1589에 지은 가옥으로, 숲이 우거진 낮은 뒷동산을 배경 삼아 다소 경사진 대지에 동남향으로 위치한다.

안채는 ‘ㅁ’자형으로 정면 5칸, 측면 5칸이고, 지붕은 팔작지붕집이다. 2단의 기단위에 세워져 있어 건물 전체가 매우 높고 웅장하다. 안채의 오른쪽 앞면에는 사랑채인 별당보물 제457호이 나와있고, 왼쪽에는 대동운부군옥목판 및 고본보물 제878호, 예천권씨 종가문적유형 제170호 외 여러 서적을 보관한 백승각이 있다. 별당 앞쪽에 행랑채 겸 대문채가 있었으나 철거되었다.

안채와 사랑채인 별당은 두 공간을 자유롭게 드나들 수 있도록 연결하였다. 이는 조선 전기 손님 접대를 중요시하는 살림집의 특징이자 누각형 접객 건물의 흔적을 볼 수 있는 드문 사례이다.

안채 오른쪽 뒤편 사당은 출입문에 붙였다 떼었다 하는 중간 설주*가 있다. 이러한 설주 양식이 나타나는 곳은 이 종택이 유일하다.

조선 전기의 건물로서 보존 상태가 양호하며, 당대 건축 구조와 양식을 연구하는 데 중요한 자료가 된다.

이 집은 예천권씨 초간공파의 종택이다. 종택이란 한 집안의 종가가 대대로 사는 집이다.

권문해(1534-1591, 호: 초간)는 조선 중기의 문신이자 학자로, 1560년 문과에 급제한 후 여러 요직을 지냈다. 당대의 대학자인 이황에게서 수학하였으며, 한국의 역사, 지리, 인물, 문학, 동식물 등을 총망라한 백과전서 『대동운부군옥』을 편찬하였다.

이 집은 권문해의 할아버지인 권오상이 1589년에 지었다. 안채와 사랑채인 별당(보물 제457호), 서고, 사당으로 구성되어 있다.

안채는 ‘ㅁ’자형 구조로 되어 있고 대청을 중심으로 왼쪽에 부엌과 안방이 있다. 안채와 별당이 서로 연결되어 있어 두 공간을 자유롭게 드나들 수 있는데, 이는 별당에서 손님 접대를 쉽게 하기 위한 것이다.

안채 왼편에는 ‘백세를 이어가는 건물’이라는 뜻의 서고 백승각이 있다. 이곳에는 『대동운부군옥』 판목(보물 제878호)과 『초간일기』(보물 제 879호) 등이 보관되어 있다.
