해설문

국문

예천권씨 초간종택 별당은 풍수지리상 명당 자리로 유명한 죽림리 대수마을에 있다. 조선 중기 문인 초간 권문해(權文海, 1534~1591)의 할아버지 권오상(權五常)이 지었다고 전하며, 예천권씨 초간공파 종택국가민속문화재 제201호 안채의 오른쪽 앞에 있는 별당 형식의 사랑채이다. 평지 위에 막돌로 높게 축대를 쌓고 그 위에 집을 세우고 난간을 돌린 다락집 모양이다. 실제로는 안채와 연결되어 있으나 지붕이 팔작지붕이기 때문에 정면에서 보면 독립된 건물처럼 보인다.

규모는 정면 4칸 측면 2칸으로, 오른쪽 3칸은 대청이고, 왼쪽 1칸은 온돌방이다. 대청 앞면은 문짝 없이 개방하고 옆면과 뒷면은 판벽을 쳤다.

외관은 네모 기둥에 주두*만을 얹어 대들보를 받친 간소하고 소박한 모습이나 별당 내부 천장은 상당히 공을 들여 정교하게 꾸몄다. 일반 주택 건축으로는 보기 드물게 뛰어난 기법으로 건물 안쪽을 장식하여 꾸민 조선 시대 별당 건축물이다.

The men's quarters, like the rest of the house, was built by Gwon O-sang, the grandfather of Gwon Mun-hae (1534-1591, pen name: Chogan), a civil official and scholar of the mid-Joseon period.

이 건물은 예천권씨 초간공파 종택에서 사랑채 역할을 한다.

권문해(1534-1591, 호: 초간)는 조선 중기의 문신이자 학자로, 1560년 문과에 급제한 후 여러 요직을 지냈다.

별당은 권문해의 할아버지인 권오상이 이 집을 지은 1589년에 함께 지어졌다. 정면에서 보면 독립된 건물처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 뒤에 있는 안채와 연결되어 있다. 평지 위에 높이 쌓은 축대 위에 지었으며, 주위에 난간을 둘러 누각처럼 꾸몄다. 건물의 오른쪽에는 넓은 대청이 있고, 왼쪽에는 온돌방이 있다.

대청 내부의 천장에는 정교한 장식이 되어 있는데, 일반 주택에서는 보기 드문 것이다.
