Gwanghyeondang House

This is the house where Yun Bong-gil was born on June 21, 1908. He lived in this house before his family moved to Jeohandang House in 1911.

He was the eldest son among the seven children of Yun Hwang and Kim Won-sang. His original name was U-ui, but has been widely known with his nickname, Bong-gil.

It is unknown when this house was built, but it was used by Yun’s family from the time of his great-grandfather. Yun named this house Dojungdo, meaning “an island at the center of the Korean Peninsula,” as the house was once surrounded by streams flowing on its each side.

The house was renovated in 1974 and was named Gwanghyeondang, meaning “a house where a light appears.”

Jeohandang House

This is the house where Yun Bong-gil lived from 1911 to 1930.

Yun Bong-gil had four brothers and two sisters, and they were devoted to one another. He committed himself to studying and promoted various national movements in this house, before he fled to Manchuria in 1930 to participate in the independence movement against the Japanese imperialists. After he left, the house was under constant surveillance by the Japanese police until Korea’s liberation in 1945.

Yun’s surviving family lived here until August 1972, two months before the house and other buildings and sites were designated as a historic site. The house was renovated in 1974.

Buheungwon School

This is a private local school established in 1928 by Yun Bong-gil to promote literacy and rural enlightenment.

One day before the school’s establishment, Yun met a young man who brought all the tomb markers from a nearby cemetery. The young man was illiterate and wanted to find out his father’s tomb. Shocked at the ignorance and negligence of this young man, Yun founded a school at the men’s quarters of his house.

Later, he built a school building in 1928 to accommodate the increased number of students. He also organized many clubs for reading and discussion, rural enlightenment, sports activities, and mutual assistance. Yun delivered a lecture on rural enlightenment and patriotism on the 14th of each month to achieve those three goals, namely, to eradicate ignorance, conquer poverty, and promote the power of unity.

The current school building was reconstructed in 1974.
