해설문

국문

백흥암 극락전은 극락세계를 상징하는 아미타부처님을 모신 건물로 조선 명종 1년(1546)에 지어졌을 것으로 추정된다. 이후 임진왜란을 겪으면서 많이 훼손되었으나 인조 21년(1643)부터 여러 차례 수리하기 시작하면서 지금의 모습을 갖추었다.

극락전 안에는 아미타부처님을 중심으로 왼쪽에는 관세음보살, 오른쪽에는 대세지보살이 모셔져 있다. 불상 뒤에 모시는 탱화로는 아미타 삼존도가 있으며 왼쪽 벽에는 감로탱화, 오른쪽 벽에는 현왕탱화, 지장탱화, 신중탱화가 있다. 위로는 커다란 용이 조각된 닫집, 아래로는 불상을 모셔 놓은 수미단이 있으며 천장에는 꽃무늬와 단청, 벽에는 여래도, 나한도 등으로 장식하여 극락세계를 시각적으로 표현하고 있다.

규모는 앞면 3칸, 옆면 3칸이며 지붕은 옆면에서 볼 때 여덟 팔(八)자 모양을 한 팔작지붕*이다. 안쪽 천장은 가운데를 높이고 주변을 낮게 만들어 층을 이루게 꾸몄으며, 수미단은 따로 보물로 지정될 만큼 조각이 매우 특이하고 우수하다.

영문

Geungnakjeon Hall of Baekheungam Hermitage of Eunhaesa Temple, Yeongcheon

Geungnakjeon is a Buddhist worship hall enshrining a statue of Amitabha, the Buddha of Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.

Geungnakjeon Hall of Baekheungam Hermitage is presumed to have first been built in 1546. It was severely damaged during the Japanese invasions (1592-1598), rebuilt in 1643, and since then underwent several repairs.

Inside the hall, there are also Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion) and Mahasthamaprapta (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Strength) statues located to the left and right of Amitabha Buddha. And on the walls of the hall, there are four Buddhist paitings. To the left is "The King of Sweet Dew" and to the right is "The King of Hell," "Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva," and "Guardian Deities."

Behind the Buddha, there is a painting of the Amitabha Buddha triad.

The ceiling of the hall is decorated with different designs and the Buddhist altar (Treasure No. 486) supporting the statue of Amitabha is considered an outstanding sculpture piece.

영문 해설 내용

극락전은 아미타불을 봉안한 법당이다. 아미타불의 공덕을 기리고 그의 이름을 염(念)하는 모든 중생들은 극락세계에 왕생할 수 있다고 여겨진다.

백흥암 극락전은 1546년에 지어진 것으로 추정된다. 임진왜란 때 많이 훼손되었으나, 1643년에 다시 지어진 이후 여러 차례 수리를 거쳤다.

극락전 안에는 아미타불을 중심으로 왼쪽에는 관세음보살, 오른쪽에는 대세지보살이 모셔져 있다. 불상 뒤에는 아미타삼존도가 있고, 왼쪽 벽에는 감로도, 오른쪽 벽에는 현왕도, 지장도, 신중도가 있다. 천장은 다양한 문양으로 장식되어 있으며, 아미타불을 받쳐놓은 수미단(보물 제486호)은 조각이 매우 특이하고 아름답다.
