This temple is said to have first been constructed in 7th century as Ungjeongam Hermitage by Master Uisang (625–702) of the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE). The temple was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of 1592, and built anew in 1603 by monks Jijo and Wonchan, who named it Yeongjisa Temple. 해설문

국문

영지사는 대한불교조계종 제10교구 본사인 은해사에서 갈라져 나온 절이다. 신라 태종 무열왕(654∼661 재위) 때 의상(義湘)이 창건한 것으로 당시에는 웅정암(熊井庵)이라고 하였다. 이 절은 조선 선조 25년(1592)에 소실되었다가 조선 선조 36년(1603)에 지조(智照)와 원찬(元贊)이 새로 지은 것이다. 이때 절 이름을 지금의 영지사로 바꾸었다고 한다. 또한, 사찰 입구에 있는 임자갑유공비(壬子甲有功碑)를 보면 영조 50년(1774)에 보수한 것을 알 수 있다.

영지사의 내부 건물로는 대웅전(大雄殿)과 명부전(冥府殿)·범종각(梵鐘閣)·산신각(山神閣)·요사채(寮舍寨) 2동 등이 있다. 이 중 대웅전은 경상북도 유형문화재 제420호, 범종각은 경상북도 문화재자료 제563호, 명부전 석조지장시왕상 일괄(冥府殿 石造地藏十王像 一括)은 경상북도 유형문화재 제485호, 대웅전 후불탱화(大雄殿 後佛幀畵)는 경상북도 유형문화재 제484호로 지정되었다.

사찰의 정문은 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸의 2층 누각으로 되어 있으며 내부에 많은 현판이 걸려 있다. 유물로 삼층석탑과 역대 주지들의 부도*가 전해진다.

영문 해설 내용

영지사는 7세기에 신라의 의상대사가 창건한 것으로 전해진다. 창건 당시에는 웅정암이라고 하였다. 1592년 임진왜란으로 소실되었다가, 1603년에 지조와 원찬이라는 스님이 새로 절을 지으면서 이름을 영지사로 바꾸었다. 절 입구의 비석에는 1774년의 중수 기록이 적혀 있다.
