해설문

국문

사룡산금정암제석탱은 70cm×65cm, 화폭55cm×54cm의 소형탱화(幀畵)불교의 신앙내용을 그린 그림이다. 소형 족자형식인데도 화기(畵記)에 제작연대와 제작자 및 관계인명(關係人名), 발원(發願)등이 자세히 기록되어 있는 점이 특이하다.

이 그림은 제석중심탱(帝釋中心幀)으로, 제석은 의자에 앉아 손으로 이제 막 피어 오른 연꽃을 두 손으로 받쳐 들고 있다. 제석의 전방 좌우에는 일월관(日月冠)을 쓴 일궁천자(日宮天子)와 월궁천자(月宮天子)가 제석을 모시고 서 있고, 그 옆에는 고관을 쓴 천인(天人)이 시선을 바깥으로 향한 채 제석을 모시고 서 있다.

다시 천인상 뒤쪽에는 악기를 연주하는 천동(天童)·천녀(天女) 4인이 등장하는데 피리, 해금, 비파 등을 연주하는 모습이 인상적이다. 등장인물들의 주변은 오색 빛깔의 새벽녘 구름으로 가득 채워져 있는데 그것의 색상은 차분하고 조화로워 그림의 분위기를 더욱 고조시킨다.

Buddhist Painting from Geumjeongam Hermitage in Saryongsan Mountain (Indra)

This painting was first enshrined in 1764 in Geumjeongam Hermitage of Saryongsan Mountain in Gyeongju, but is now kept in Pyochungsa Temple. It is painted on silk and has the form of a scroll, with wooden rods attached to the top and the bottom.

In the center of the painting, Indra, the guardian deity protecting the teachings of Buddha and all his followers, is depicted seated on a throne. Indra is believed to live on the top of the legendary Mount Meru, which in Buddhist cosmology symbolizes the center of the universe. In front of Indra are a group of deities, and in the back are heavenly beings pictured playing musical instruments. The background is filled with a pattern of auspicious clouds in various colors.

Various information about the painting, including when it was created and the names of its authors, as well as written vows are recorded in detail at the bottom of the scroll.

The scroll measures in total 70 cm in length and 65 cm in width, and the canvas itself measures 55 cm in length and 54 cm in width.

영문 해설 내용

이 불화는 1764년 경주 사룡산의 금정암에 봉안되었던 것으로, 현재는 영천 표충사에서 보관하고 있다. 비단에 그려졌으며, 위아래에 나무로 된 축이 달린 족자 형태로 되어 있다.

중앙에 그려진 제석은 불교에서 부처의 가르침과 이에 귀의하는 자를 보호하는 수호신이다. 불교의 우주관에서 세계의 중앙에 있다고 하는 상상의 산인 수미산 정상에 살고 있다고 한다. 제석 앞에는 4위의 천자들이 서 있고, 뒤쪽에는 악기를 연주하는 천인들의 모습이 그려져 있다. 등장인물들의 주변은 여러 가지 색깔의 상서로운 구름무늬로 채워져 있다.

그림 아래에 제작연대와 관계자 이름, 발원 등이 자세히 기록되어 있다.
