The Yeongju Traditional Korean Culture Experience Complex was built to preserve cultural heritages in the area which has been submerged due to the construction of Yeongju Dam, and use them as tourist resources. A total of 12 designated on a national or provincial level heritages and five non-designated ones were moved to a 60,393㎡ site, where a village history museum and a hanok experience center were also built.

Amongst the buildings moved here, there are traditional Korean houses such as houses with "magpie holes" and square layout houses. A house with "magpie holes" refers to a traditional Korean thatched-roof house with round holes on either end of the roof, while a square layout house refers to a house in which several buildings that a house consists of form a square layout with a courtyard in the middle. In addition to this, the complex contains pavilions and study halls for academic and leisure activities, folk religious spaces Mireukdang Shrine and Village Guardian Shrine, as well as the Monument of Ungokseowon Confucian Academy which was made to commemorate Ungok Confucian Academy.

영주 전통문화체험단지는 영주댐 건설로 수몰되는 문화재를 보존하고 관광 자원으로 활용하려는 목적에서 평은면 금광리 산 73번지 일원에 조성한 것이다. 60,393㎡의 부지에 지정문화재 12개소와 비지정문화재 5개소를 옮겨 세웠고, 마을역사자료관과 한옥체험관을 만들었다.

이 문화재 단지에는 일상 생활을 알 수 있는 ‘ㅁ’ 자 모양의 한옥과 까치구멍집 등의 전통 가옥을 비롯하여 학문과 여가 활동을 엿볼 수 있는 정자, 서당, 유허비, 신앙 생활을 보여주는 미륵당과 성황당 등이 있다. 이러한 문화재를 통해 조선 시대부터 현대까지 평은면 일원에 살았던 사람들의 삶을 간접적으로 이해할 수 있다.

전통문화체험단지로 이전한 지정 문화재로는 국가민속문화재 제262호 영주 괴헌 고택, 경상북도 유형문화재 제341호 영주 금광리 장석우 가옥, 경상북도 민속문화재 제141호 영주 금광리 성황당과 경상북도 문화재 자료 제233호 금광리 장씨 고택, 제529호 영주 덕산 고택, 제565호 영주 내림리 모은정, 제567호 영주 도림서당, 제568호 영주 금광리 만연헌, 제569호 영주 금광리 의관댁, 제570호 영주 금광리 까치구멍집, 제578호 영주 금광리 심원정, 제579호 영주 신천리 월춘정 등으로 국가민속문화재 1개소, 경상북도 유형문화재 1개소, 경상북도 민속문화재 1개소, 경상북도 문화재 자료 9개소이다. 비지정문화재로는 동강정, 직방재, 동호정, 미륵당, 유허비 등이 있다.

영문 해설 내용

영주 전통문화체험단지는 영주댐 건설(2009-2016)에 따라 수몰되는 지역에 있던 문화재를 보존하고 관광 자원으로 활용하기 위해 조성하였다. 60,393㎡의 부지에 국가지정 및 시도지정문화재 총 12개소와 비지정문화재 5개소를 옮겨 세웠고, 마을역사자료관과 한옥체험관을 만들었다.

이곳에 옮겨진 건축물로는 한국의 전통 가옥인 까치구멍집과 ‘ㅁ’자형 집 등이 있다. 까치구멍집은 통풍과 채광을 위해 지붕의 양쪽 합각에 둥근 구멍을 낸 집을 말하고, ‘ㅁ’자형 집은 하나의 집을 구성하는 여러 건물들이 안마당을 중심으로 ㅁ자형으로 배치된 집을 말한다. 이밖에도 이 단지에는 학문과 여가 활동을 위해 지어진 정자와 서당, 민속 신앙 공간인 미륵당과 성황당, 영주에 있던 운곡서원을 기념하기 위해 세워진 유허비가 있다.

지정문화재로는 국가민속문화재 1개소(영주 괴헌 고택), 경상북도 유형문화재 1개소(영주 금광리 장석우 가옥), 경상북도 민속문화재 1개소(영주 금광리 성황당), 경상북도 문화재자료 9개소(금광리 장씨 고택, 영주 덕산 고택, 영주 내림리 모은정, 영주 도림서당, 영주 금광리 만연헌, 영주 금광리 의관댁, 영주 금광리 까치구멍집, 영주 금광리 심원정, 영주 신천리 월춘정)이 있다.
