Isanseowon Confucian Academy was established as village study hall in 1558 by local magistrate, which at this time was in Ansang. Village study halls, called seodang in Korean, were local private education institutions established to teach classical Chinese and elementary Confucian classics. Local magistrate received request for establishing village study hall in this area from Yi Hwang (1501-1570), notable scholar of that time. And name of the study hall, name of every building, managerial regulations, etc. were appointed by Yi Hwang.

해설문

국문

이산 서원은 영주 지역에 처음으로 세워진 서원이다. 조선 명종 13년(1558)에 군수 안상이 마을 선비의 뜻을 받아들이고 이황에게 자문하여 이산면 원리(현재 휴천동)에 이산 서원을 세웠다. 선조 5년(1572)에 사당을 세우고 이황의 위패를 모셨으며, 선조 7년(1574)에 사액*을 받았다. 광해군 6년(1614)에는 이산면 내림리로 옮겼다. 이후 고종 8년(1871)에 흥선대원군의 서원 철거 명령에 따라 문을 닫았다.

이후 이산 서원만 남아 있다가 일제 강점기인 1936년에 강당인 경지당과 문인 지도문을 복원하였으나, 붕괴 위험 때문에 1995년에 해체하여 보수하고 주변을 정비하였다. 이후 영주댐 건설로 2019년에 현재의 위치로 옮겼다.

이산 서원을 건립할 때, 서원 이름과 건물 이름, 운영 규칙인 원규 등을 모두 퇴계 이황이 정하였는데, 이때 정한 이산 서원의 원규는 우리나라 서원 원규의 시초가 되었다. 이처럼 이산 서원은 우리나라 서원의 형성 과정을 알려주는 귀중한 자료이다.

서원은 현재의 학교처럼 학문을 연구하고 인재를 양성하던 조선 시대의 사설 교육 기관이다.

영문 해설 내용

서원은 조선시대에 설립된 사설교육기관으로, 선현 제향과 교육의 기능을 수행하였다.

이산서원은 1558년 당시 군수였던 안상이 지역 주민들을 위한 서당으로 창건하였다. 창건과 운영에 대해서는 당시의 대학자인 이황(1501-1570)의 자문을 받았으며, 서당의 이름, 각 건물의 명칭, 운영 규칙 등은 모두 이황이 1559년에 정했다.

1572년 사당을 세워 이황의 위패를 모시면서 서원으로 발전되었으며, 1574년 사액을 받았다. 1871년 서원철폐령에 의해 문을 닫았다가 1936년 강당과 문을 다시 지었으며, 붕괴 위험 때문에 1995년 해체 후 보수되었다. 영주댐 건설에 따라 2019년 현재 위치로 옮겨졌으며, 동·서재 등의 부속건물들을 다시 지었다.
