Dorimseodang Village Study Hall, Yeongju

Village study halls, called seodang in Korean, were local private education institutions established to teach classical Chinese and elementary Confucian classics.

Dorimseodang was built in 1625 in Naerim-ri. In accordance with the will of his father, Park Rok (1542-1632), son of the Yeongju-born civil official and Confucian scholar Park Seung-im (1517-1586), constructed it together with other intellectual elites such as Song Sang-heon and Jeon I-heon. After that, it was rebuilt a number of times.

This tiled-roof building has a wooden-floored hall in the center with two underfloor heated rooms on either side.

It is said that at this site classes were held even after the establishment of modern educational institutions during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) and records related to the operation of the study hall are housed there until today. The place shows the historical tradition of local educational institutions.
