관음송의 나이는 600년 정도로 추정하며, 높이 30m, 가슴높이 둘레 5.19m로 1.6m 되는 높이에서 줄기가 두 갈래로 갈라져 하나는 위로 하나는 서쪽으로 약간 기울어 자라고 있다.
세조에게 왕위를 빼앗긴 단종이 이곳에서 유배 생활을 하면서 둘로 갈라진 이 나무의 줄기에 걸터앉아 시간을 보냈다고 전한다. 관음송이라는 이름은 단종의 비참한 모습을 지켜보았다고 해서 ‘볼 관’ 자를, 단종의 슬픈 말소리를 들었다 하여 ‘소리 음’ 자를 따서 붙였다고 한다. 나라에 큰일이 있을 때마다 나무껍질이 검은색으로 변하여 나라의 변고를 알려 주었다 하여 마을 사람들은 이 나무를 귀하게 여겼다고 한다.
이 나무는 단종과 관련된 전설이 있는 등 역사적·학술적 자료로서 보존 가치가 인정되어 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.
