위숲

영양 주사골 시무나무와 비술나무 숲은 17세기에 재령 이 씨 집안의 주곡공 이도(做谷公 李櫂)와 주계공 이용(做溪公 李榕) 형제가 조성한 숲이다. 수해를 방지하고 바람을 막는 한편 주사골 마을의 경치를 아름답게 하려는 목적으로 이 숲을 만들었다고 한다. 주사골이라는 마을의 이름도 이 두 형제의 호를 딴 것이다.

주사골의 시무나무와 비술나무 숲은 다른 지역의 전통적인 마을 숲과 달리 위 숲과 아래 숲으로 나뉘어 조성된 점과 시무나무와 비술나무가 주종을 이룬다는 점이 특색이다. 시무나무는 줄기와 가지에 긴 가시가 돋아나 있는 것이 특징으로 마을에서는 스무나무로 불렸다. 봄에 돋아나는 시무나무의 새잎은 식용으로 쓰였다고 전해진다.

위 숲은 면적이 10,000㎡ 정도이다. 이 숲에는 조성 초기에 심어서 거목이 된 시무나무와 비술나무 외에도 이 나무들의 후계목, 산팽나무, 말채나무, 쉬나무, 참빗살나무, 느티나무, 옻나무 등이 자라고 있다.

(Upper) Forest of David Hemiptelea and Dwarf Elms in Jusagol Valley, Yeongyang

This forest was created in the 17th century by two brothers of Jaeryeong Yi Clan, namely Yi Do (1636-1712) and Yi Yong (1640-1693). It was planted to protect the village from strong winds and floods and to add to the beautiful scenery. The name of the valley in which the forest is located, Jusagol, means "valley of the 'Ju' literati," and comes from the two brothers' pen names, Jugok and Jugye.

This forest is unique in that it is divided into an upper and lower section, each measuring 10,000 sq. m. The two most populous tree species in this forest are David hemiptelea and dwarf elm.

David hemiptelea (Hemiptelea davidii (Hance) Planch.) is a deciduous shrub in the family Ulmaceae. It an extremely rare tree that is native only to Korea and parts of China. It has many spiny branches and serrated leaves. It is said the local villagers used to eat the leaf buds of this plant.

Dwarf elm (Ulmus pumila) is a deciduous tree in the family Ulmaceae and is found all throughout Northeast Asia.

Inside the lower forest, there is a shrine called Dongjedang where a village ritual is held during a festival celebrating the first full moon of the lunar new year.

In recognition of the forest's historical and cultural value, it was designated as Natural Monument No. 476 in 2007.

(Lower) Forest of David Hemiptelea and Dwarf Elms in Jusagol Valley, Yeongyang
