Yeonsanhyanggyo Local Confucian School

Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

Yeonsanhyanggyo Local Confucian School was established in 1398 by the local magistrate Bak Gon and has since undergone several repairs.

The complex, from front to back, includes a main gate, two dormitory buildings, a lecture hall called Myeongnyundang, an inner gate, and a shrine called Daeseongjeon. A custodian's residence is located to the right of the school and a small pavilion called Munmyojeong is located to the east in front of the school. It is not common to have a pavilion next to the school, and Munmyojeong is the only pavilion built near a local Confucian school in Chungcheongnam-do Province.

The shrine contains the spirit tablets of 27 Confucian sages and men of virtue. Among these, are the spirit tablets of Kim Jang-saeng (1548-1631) and his son Kim Jip (1574-1656), who were Confucian scholars and educators of this school.

Rituals for Confucius and the other Confucian sages are performed in the second and eighth lunar months each year.
