U Tak was born in Danyang and passed the state examination in 1290. When the ''Commentaries on the Book of Changes'' (I Ching) by the Northern Song Chinese scholar Cheng Yi (1033-1107) was introduced to Korea, no one could seem to understand it. Having extensive knowledge on ancient divination, U Tak studied this book thoroughly, grasped its meaning, and taught it to his students. U Tak’s pen name Yeokdong comes from this story and means “(He Who Brought) the Changes to the East.” U Tak spent his later years in the Andong area.

The establishment of Yeokdongseowon, named after U Tak’s pen name, was proposed by the renowned scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570), who deeply respected U Tak. The academy was royally chartered in 1684. In 1868, the academy was demolished due to a nationwide decree to shut down shrines and Confucian academies. It was rebuilt in 1969. In 1991, Andong National University was established here and has since managed this academy.

The academy consists of three areas: the lecture area in the center which consists of a main gate, two dormitories, and a lecture hall, the ritual area to the rear right which consists of an inner gate and a shrine, and a management area to the left which consists of a gate and two ritual preparation buildings. There are various hanging wooden plaques hanging in front of or inside the buildings, the majority of which were personally calligraphed by Yi Hwang.
