여수 흥국사 대웅전 관음보살 벽화는 자비를 상징하는 관음보살을 그린 것으로 17세기에 제작된 것으로 추정된다. 벽화의 크기는 가로 289cm, 세로 393cm이다.
관음보살은 흰 옷을 입고 아미타불이 장식된 보관을 머리에 쓴 모습이며, 머리 뒤에는 초록색의 광배*가 표현되어 있다. 바다에서 솟아난 연꽃 대좌**에 왼발을 올리고, 왼쪽 허벅지에 오른발을 올린 자세를 취하고 있다. 관음보살의 오른편에는 관음보살의 상징인 감로병이 연꽃 위에 올려져 있고, 오른쪽 무릎 옆에는 합장을 한 선재동자가 그려져 있다.
불전의 뒷벽에 불화(佛畫)를 그리는 경우는 대부분 벽에 직접 그리는데, 이 작품은 17장의 한지 위에 채색하여 그린 그림을 벽 위에 붙이는 독특한 방식으로 제작한 것이 특징이다.
