양조장은 술을 만드는 공장이다. 일제강점기에 설립하여 우리 술을 없애려는 일본의 억누름 속에서 한국의 술맛을 지켜냈다. 해방 이후 운영자가 바뀐 후 현재 3대에 걸쳐 이어가고 있다.

1925년 무렵에 세워진 양조장 건물은 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 양조장 중 하나이다. 한옥 건물에 일본의 건축 기술이 더해졌고, 당시 술 생산 공장의 기능적 특성을 건축적으로 잘 보여 준다. 환기를 위해 높은 창을 두고, 일정한 온도를 유지하기 위해 천장에 왕겨(벼의 겉껍질)를 채웠다. 양조장 안쪽에 있는 우물은 술을 만드는 물로 사용하였다.

지평양조장은 한국 전쟁 당시 유엔군의 지휘소로 사용되기도 하였다. 1951년 2월 양평 지평리 일대에서 유엔군은 중공군과 4일간 전투를 벌여 승리하였다. 지평리 전투로 당시 지평리 일대는 폐허가 되었다. 지평양조장은 당시 유엔군 지휘소였기 때문에 유일하게 건물이 남아 있다.

Jipyeong Brewery, established in 1925, is one of the oldest makgeolli breweries in Korea.

Makgeolli is a Korean alcohol made from rice, water, a fermentation starter called nuruk, and sometimes other ingredients. It is usually sweet, carbonated, and has a milky color.

It was first established by Yi Jong-hwan in 1925 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The Japanese colonial authorities banned the production of Korean traditional alcohol, but this place continued brewing in secret. Following Korea's liberation from Japan in 1945, a new owner Kim Gyo-sip took over the business. His descendants have continued to operate the company, which has expanded to become one of the most popular brands of makgeolli in Korea.

이곳에서 생산하는 술은 쌀로 만드는 한국의 전통주인 막걸리이다. 환기를 위해 건물 상단에 창을 두고, 온도 유지를 위해 천장에 왕겨를 채우는 등 술을 생산하기 위한 공장으로서의 기능적 특징이 잘 나타난다.
