This traditional Korean house was used as the residence of Ryu Ji-yeong (1828-1896, pen name: Jisan). He passed the state examination in 1857 and served as a royal secretary, censor-general, and magistrate of Andong.

In 1841, when he moved out of his older brother’s house, Yeomhaengdang, to set up a branch family, he inherited this house and named it Jonyangdang, literally meaning “a house of preservation and nourishment.” This comes from Mencius’ saying: “To preserve one’s mental constitution, and nourish one’s nature, is the way to serve Heaven.”

The house consists of a main quarters, a gate quarters, and a men’s quarters.

The house includes a men’s quarters and a women’s quarters, which together form a square layout with one open sides, and a linear-shaped auxiliary quarters.

The men’s quarters has a front wooden porch facing Hwasan Mountain, which features two plaques. Each bears an inscription. One is “Jisan seoru,” meaning “Reading pavilion of Jisan.” It is the name of men’s quarters, named after Ryu Ji-yeong’s pen name. The other is “Maeam,” which means “Plum hermitage.”
