It is said that Ryu Un-ryong (1539~1601), civil official and scholar in the mid period of Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), initially created this forest by planting pines in the river shore according to Korean feng shui principles to soften the strong energy coming from Buyongdae cliff across the river and to ensure the village is safe and peaceful. However, the original woods were lost over a long period of time and the present pinewoods took its form with new pines being planted in 1906.

It is said that there used to be a pavilion called Mansongjeong in the woods. But the building was destroyed by a great flood in 1605 and only the name is preserved in the name of the forest. In 1983, the monument of Pinewoods of Mansongjeong Pavilion was erected in the southern shore of the forest, which records the history of forest creation.
