해설문

국문

이 불상은 안동군 월곡면 미질동에서 발굴된 것으로 그 곳에 있던 안정사에 보관되어 있었다. 본래는 연화좌대(蓮花座臺)에 안치된 석불상인데 안정사 주지가 방에 안치하면서 금분을 칠해 원형이 다소 손상되었다. 대좌(臺座)와 광배(光背)는 없어졌다. 그 뒤 안동댐 건설로 안정사가 폐사 되면서 1973년부터 봉정사에서 보관하고 있다.

신체에 비해 작은 불두(佛頭)에는 나선형 머리카락(螺髮)과 큼직한 살상투가 표현되었다. 당당하고 둥근 어깨에서 느껴지는 양감에 비해 가슴은 대체로 평평하며, 결가부좌를 튼 하반신을 높게 표현하여 안정감이 느껴진다. 손은 항마촉지인(降魔觸地印)을 취하고 있다.

이 불상의 양식은 통일신라 하대의 방식과 유사하므로 제작시기를 9세기경으로 추정한다.

영문

Stone Seated Buddha from Anjeongsa Temple, Andong

This Buddha statue is presumed to have been made in the 9th century. It was moved from Anjeongsa Temple to Bongjeongsa Temple in 1973 when Anjeongsa Temple was shut down due to the construction of Andong Dam.

The stone statue was originally made with a lotus pedestal and a halo of light, but they are missing now. The statue itself is also a slightly damaged as its entire surface is painted with golden powder. He sits with his legs crossed and has curly hair and a large protuberance on the top of the head. His right hand reaches down toward the ground, indicating his defeat of worldly desires, and his left hand rests on his lap, indicating attainment of spiritual enlightenment.
