'''Sohoheon House, Andong'''

Sohoheon House was the residence of Seo Hae (1537-1559), a Confucian student in the early Joseon (1392-1910) period. The house was given to him by Yi Go from the Goseong Yi clan in Andong, Seo Hae's father-in-law. As a young man, Seo Hae read Confucian classics with Yu Seongryong and Kim Seongil, both of  whom later served the government in high positions under Yi Hwang (1501-1570, pen name: Toegye), Although Seo Hae showed literary talent, he died at the age of 23.

This house was the private study of Seo Hae (1537-1559), a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910). It was given to him by his father-in-law Yi Go.

Seo Seong (1558-1631), Seo Hae's son born in this house, was a student of Yi Yi, one of the two great Confucian scholars along with Yi Hwang, and later served as Minister of War. As Seo Seong's son, Seo Gyeongju (1579-1643), married Princess Jeongsin, a daughter of King Seonjo, Seo's family became more prosperous and produced lots of learned offspring.

Seo Hae came from a family of esteemed civil officials and studied the Confucian classics under the academic school of the renowned scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570). Although Seo Hae demonstrated potential, he died of disease at the young age of 23. His wife Lady Yi, who was an only daughter and blind, took their young son Seo Seong (1558-1631) to Seoul where she sold liquor and snacks to help fund his education. He passed the state examination in 1586 and later served as minister of military affairs and minister of taxation. Unlike his father, he followed the academic school of the renowned scholar Yi I (1536-1584). Seo Seong’s son Seo Gyeong-ju (1579-1643) married Princess Jeongsin (1582-1653), the eldest daughter of King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608). In this way, the Seo family gained prosperity and produced many talented scholars and officials.

In the front is the main quarters, behind which are two rooms with heating systems, and a pavilion is on the side. It is noticeable that the roof tiles of the House carved with dragon design are quite rare in the ordinary residence in the early period of Joseon (1392-1910)
+
The house is shaped like the letter T turned on its side. On the left, there is an underfloor-heated room. On the right, there is an elevated wooden porch in the front and an enclosed wooden-floored hall in the back. The tiles at the end of the roof are decorated with dragon designs, which is rarely seen outside of royal or religious architecture.

To the left of the house is the placenta chamber of Seo Seong. During the Joseon period, there was a custom of placing a baby’s placenta and umbilical cord in a jar and burying it in an auspicious place to wish for the baby’s good fortune.
