Stone Lions, Andong

This pair of stone lions are presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period (918-1392). They were found at the former site of Andonghyanggyo Local Confucian School and moved to Andong National University where they are currently housed.

The statues are missing their legs, but their extended body position can still be seen. Stone lion statues with a similar position have been found as part of the bases of stone lanterns at Beopjusa Temple (National Treasure No. 5) and Jungheungsanseong Fortress (National Treasure No. 108). In these lanterns, the lions stand on their hind feet and prop up the lantern with their front paws. It is therefore presumed that this pair of lion statues may have originally been part of a stone lantern.

According to a record from 1608, the statues once stood to the left and right of the main gate of the local Confucian school. When the statues were found at the site of the local Confucian school, foundation stones with lotus designs were found in the vicinity, suggesting that the statues were originally related to a Buddhist temple.
