해설문

국문

봉정사의 극락전(極樂殿) 앞뜰에 있는 이 탑은 고려시대에 만들어진 것으로 높이는 3.18m이다. 탑 기단부의 일부가 약간 파손되었으며 상륜부(相輪部)의 일부가 남아 있지 않으나 거의 완전한 3층 석탑이다. 2중(二重) 기단의 방형 석탑으로서 기단부에 비해 탑신부의 폭이 좁으며 각층 높이의 체감이 적당한 반면 폭의 체감율이 적고 지붕돌도 높이에 비해 폭이 좁아 처마의 반전이 약하다. 따라서 전체적으로 약간 둔한 느낌을 준다.

이 탑은 봉정사의 극락전과 건립연대가 같을 것으로 추정되며 당대의 다른 석탑과 비교하여 특이한 점이나 미적으로 뛰어난 점은 없으나 전체적으로 고려 중엽의 석탑양식을 잘 갖추고 있다.

영문

Three-story Stone Pagoda of Bongjeongsa Temple, Andong

This three-story stone pagoda is believed to have been made during the Goryeo period (918-1392).

This pagoda is composed of one base tier, three sets of body and roof stones, and a decorative top. The base tier and the top are partially damaged. The corners of the body stones are carved to look like pillars, and the first-story body stone is carved with a door and padlock. The roof stones are curved slightly upward. It is presumed this pagoda was constructed at the same time as Geungnakjeon Hall, in front of which it stands, and demonstrates the typical style of mid-Goryeo period pagodas. The height of this pagoda is 3.18 m.
