해설문

국문

• 1796년(정조 20) 창건
• 1975년 누각 복원

팔달산 중턱 서1치와 서2치 사이에 설치한 포루이다. 급한 경사지에 지었기 때문에 평지에 둔 다른 포루에 비해 규모가 작다. 이에 맞춰 화포나 총을 쏘는 구멍 숫자도 줄였다. 다른 포루는 한 줄에 세 곳을 뚫은데 비해 두 곳만 설치했다. 상부의 누각은 복원했으나 벽돌로 축조한 포루는 1796년(정조 20)에 만든 원형이 남아있다. 누각 지붕은 긴 추녀를 쓴 우진각으로 지어 다른 포루보다 격식을 높였다.

영문

An artillery pavilion, called poru in Korean, is an outwardly projecting structure topped with a pavilion, inside which artillery is installed for use in attacking the enemy. There are five artillery pavilions in Hwaseong Fortress.

The Western Artillery Pavilion is situated on the slope between Hwaseomun Gate and the Western Command Post. It is the smallest in size among the artillery pavilions of Hwaseong Fortress.

영문 해설 내용

포루(砲樓)는 성벽의 일부를 외부로 돌출시킨 치성 위에 누각을 두고 그 안에 포를 설치하였다가 외적을 공격하도록 설치한 시설이다. 화성에는 모두 5개소의 포루를 설치하였다.

서포루는 화서문에서 서장대로 이어지는 경사지에 설치되어 있다. 화성에 있는 포루 가운데 크기가 가장 작다.
