서장대 뒤에 설치한 노대이다. 높다란 대 위에 군사들이 올라가서 적의 동향을 관찰하고 성내에 신호를 보내는 용도였다. 대는 몸체가 8각으로 되어서 위로 가면서 줄어드는 모습이다. 안쪽은 흙을 채우고 겉은 벽돌로 마감하고 여덟 방향을 따라 돌을 가늘고 길게 다듬어 틀을 짜서 견고한 외관을 꾸몄다. 대 위에 주둔하는 군사들이 기계식 활인 노(弩)를 쏘았기 때문에 노대란 이름이 붙었다.

영문

An archery platform, called nodae in Korean, is a tall structure from which the enemy could be attacked with a mechanical bow. There are two archery platforms in Hwaseong Fortress, one in the west and one in the northeast.

The Western Archery Platform is built of bricks in a narrow octagonal shape. It sits at the highest point in Hwaseong Fortress, from which soldiers could monitor the movements of distant enemies and attack. It was built between the Western Command Post and the adjacent fortress wall, so it also served as a defensive facility protecting the command post.

영문 해설 내용

노대는 기계식 활로 적을 공격하기 위해 높이 지은 건축물이다. 화성에는 서쪽과 동북쪽에 2개의 노대가 있다.

서노대는 벽돌로 쌓아 정팔각형의 좁고 높은 형태로 만들었다. 화성에서 가장 높은 곳으로, 적의 움직임을 살피고 멀리 있는 적을 공격할 수도 있었다. 또한 서장대와 성벽 사이에 위치해서 서장대를 보호하는 역할도 하였다.
