해설문

국문

장안문 서쪽에 세운 적대이다. 적대의 정면 폭은 위로 가면서 눈에 띠게 줄여서 구조와 외관이 안정감이 있다. 화성에는 모두 네 군데 적대를 쌓았지만 팔달문 좌우에 쌓은 적대는 사라지고, 장안문 좌우 적대만 남아 있다. 북동적대와 같이 몸체에 현안 세 줄을 냈는데 팔달문의 좌우 적대에는 현안을 두 줄만 설치했다. 장안문의 방어를 더 중요하게 여겼음을 알려준다.

영문

A gate guard post, called jeokdae in Korean, is a projecting structure built to either side of a fortress gate to monitor the gate and prevent enemy access. Hwaseong Fortress was the first fortress with such a defensive structure during the Joseon dynasty. Hwaseong originally had four gate guard posts, two each at Janganmun and Paldalmun Gates, but only those at Janganmun remain.

The three vertical slits in the middle of the Northwestern Gate Guard Post were designed to attack enemies trying to approach the wall. The wall between the Northwestern Gate Guard Post and Janganmun Gate was once demolished to construct a paved road but was rebuilt in 2007.

영문 해설 내용

적대는 성문을 감시하고 적의 접근을 막기 위해 성문 좌우에 설치한 시설이다. 조선시대 성곽에 이런 적대를 둔 것은 화성이 처음이었다. 화성에는 원래 장안문과 팔달문에 총 4개의 적대가 세워졌지만, 지금은 장안문의 적대만 남아있다.

북서적대의 몸체 한가운데에 뚫려있는 수직 방향의 깊은 홈은 성벽에 접근하려는 적을 공격할 수 있게 한 장치이다. 북서적대와 장안문 사이는 자동차 도로를 내면서 성벽이 끊어져 있다가 2007년에 도로를 없애고 성벽을 복원하였다.
