해설문

국문

수심대는 중봉(重峯) 조헌(趙憲)의 사당 뒤쪽에 있는 커다란 바위이다. 낮은 동산에 자리를 잡고서 오랜 세월 풍상을 이겨낸 소나무들과 함께 조헌 사당을 지키고 있다.

하천 쪽을 향하고 있는 낮은 위치에 ‘수심대(水心臺)’라는 글씨가 새겨져 있다. 수심대라는 이름은 조헌이 지었고, 글씨는 우암(尤庵) 송시열이 새겼다. 글씨 안쪽에는 붉은색이 칠해져 있다.

수심대라는 이름은 유등천 상류에서부터 굽이쳐 흐르는 사행천(蛇行川) 양쪽으로 3개의 마을이 마치 심心 자와 같이 자리를 잡았다고 해서 붙여진 이름이라고 한다. 조헌은 임진왜란 이전에 옥천군 안읍 밤티율치에 살면서 이곳을 자주 왕래하였는데, 후손들에게 이곳에서 살라는 뜻으로 다음과 같은 말을 남겼다.

“심천(心川)과 북수(北水) 사이가 곧 이곳이니 당당히 화를 피하고 기(氣)를 솟게 하는 어귀이다. 이 어귀는 그 땅을 안정시킬 것이니 이곳이 요지(要地)이다. 뒤에 논함이 번거롭게 끝없이 계속된다 하더라도 삼가 없어짐이 없도록 할 것이다.”

영문 해설 내용

수심대는 조선 중기의 문신이자 의병장인 조헌(1544-1592)의 사당 뒤쪽에 있는 커다란 바위이다.

관직에서 물러난 이후, 조헌은 인근 마을에 머물면서 학문과 후학 양성에 힘썼고, 당시 이곳에 자주 왕래하였다. 임진왜란이 일어나자 금산지역에서 700여 명의 의병을 이끌었다.

전체적인 모습은 바위산을 닮았고, 주변에는 소나무들이 자라고 있다.

하천 쪽을 향하고 있는 바위 한 면에는 ‘수심대’라는 글씨가 새겨져 있다. 글씨는 조선 후기 정치가이자 대학자인 송시열(1607-1689)이 썼다.
