A stupa is a structure containing the relics or remains of Buddhist monks.

Sinheungsa Temple was first established in 652 as Hyangseongsa Temple, and its name and location were changed several times afterward. In 1644, the temple was moved to its current location and acquired its present name. During the relocation, stupas of successive generations of Buddhist monks were gathered here in one location.

There are 19 stupas in total. The inscriptions of seven of the stupas are so worn down that it is unknown to whom they were dedicated. The stupas come in two shapes: octagonal (of which there are three) and round bell-shaped (of which there are 16).
