현왕도(現王圖)는 염라대왕의 미래불인 보현왕여래(普賢王如來)와 그 권속을 그린 명계불화(冥系佛畵)이다. 현왕은 망자의 천도를 위해 사후 3일째 되는 날에 지내는 성왕재(聖王齋)의 주인공이다. 현왕도는 명부전, 지장전 등의 명부 전각이 아니라 사찰의 주불전 좌우 영단에 거는데, 화면 구성에 지옥장면이 없는 것이 특징이다.

보광사(普光寺) 현왕도는 여덟 폭의 병풍을 배경으로 의자에 앉은 보현왕여래와 그를 보좌하는 7분의 구성원들이 현왕을 향해 배치되어 있다. 현왕(現王)의 주위에는 어피(魚皮)로 된 사각도장함과 복숭아를 든 천동(天童)과 천녀(天女) 그리고 인간의 삶과 죽음의 경계가 적힌 명부(名簿)와 홀을 받쳐 든 판관이 있다. 제왕의 관을 쓴 두 인물은 현왕을 보필하는 대륜성왕(大輪聖王)과 전륜성왕(轉輪聖王)이다.

보광사 현왕도는 조성원문에 따르면 1863년에 화사(畫師) 송암대원(松岩大遠), 법인(法仁), 삼여(三如)와 함께 금어(金魚) 원명긍우(圓明亘祐)가 참여하여 조성했다. 조선시대에 등장하는 현왕도는 대체로 19세기 후반에 주로 조성되었는데, 속초 보광사 현왕도는 19세기 중반 강원도 지역에서 제작 시기가 가장 빠르고, 작품성이 뛰어나 조선후기 불교회화 연구에 중요한 유물이다.
