해설문

국문

세심정은 명종 16년(1561)에 조욱(趙昱)의 제자들이 세심당(조욱의 집) 근처에 세운 정자이다. 기둥이 6각형을 이룬 형태(6각원당형)로, 현재의 건축물은 1940년 무렵에 고쳐 지은 것이다.

조욱은 조광조의 제자로, 1546년 이곳에 머무르면서 집 이름을 세심당(洗心堂)이라 하였다. 이곳에서 학문 연구와 제자를 기르는 일에 힘썼다.

영문 해설 내용

선 중기의 학자 조욱(1498-1557)의 제자들이 스승을 기리기 위해 1561년에 세운 정자이다.

조욱은 조선의 유명한 성리학자이자 문신이었던 조광조(1482-1519)의 제자이다. 1519년에 일어난 사화 때 스승 조광조와 그 문인들이 유배되거나 파직되었으나 조욱은 나이가 어려 화를 면했다. 이후 용문산에 은거하며 학문과 교육에 힘썼고, ‘용문 선생’이라 불렸다. 시문과 서화에도 능했다.

이 정자는 조욱이 생전에 제자들에게 학문을 강론하던 곳에 지어졌다. 현재의 건물은 1985년에 새로 지은 것이다.
