해설문

국문

유학자들이 서로의 의견을 나누고 학생들을 가르치기 위한 장소로, 조선 후기 성주의 유학자 도상욱(都尙郁)이 만들기 시작했다. 공사 중 흉년으로 공사가 중단되자, 당시 성주목사인 성종인(成鍾仁)이 그 뜻을 이어 정조 19년(1795)에 완공하였다.

기국정의 ‘기(杞)’는 구기자를, ‘국(菊)’은 국화를 뜻하는데, 유교를 집대성한 중국의 주자(朱子)가 이것들을 심은 것에서 유래하여 긴 세월, 오래도록 절개를 지키는 군자를 의미하게 되었다. 송자(宋子)라고도 불리는 조선 성리학의 대가 송시열 역시 같은 이름의 별당을 지은 바 있다.

건물에서 가장 큰 특징은 영쌍창으로, 두 창문 사이에 기둥이 있는 형식을 지칭한다. 조선시대 초·중기 건물에서 주로 보이는 영쌍창이 조선후기 건물에 사용된 상당히 드문 경우로 주목된다.

영문 해설 내용

이곳은 성주 지역의 유학자들이 교류하고 후진을 양성하기 위해 지어진 곳이다. 당시 성주의 유학자인 도상욱이 짓기 시작하였으나, 흉년으로 공사가 중단되었다. 이후 성주 목사인 성종인이 그 뜻을 치하하고 건립비용을 지원하여, 1795년에 건물이 완공되었다.

도상욱은 학문이 뛰어나 여러 제자를 가르쳤다. 정조 때 전국의 읍지를 편찬하라는 왕명이 내려졌을 때, 성주읍지의 편찬과 교정에 참여하였다.

이 건물은 오른쪽의 대청마루와 온돌방으로 이루어져 있다. ‘기국’은 ‘구기자와 국화’라는 뜻으로 ‘긴 세월 오래도록 절개를 지키는 군자’를 의미한다.
