Seong Sam-mun was a scholar-official at the Hall of Worthies (called Jiphyeonjeon in Korean), who contributed to the invention of the Korean writing system Hangeul. When in 1455 King Danjong’s (r. 1452-1455) throne was usurped by his uncle King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), Seong together with others opposing the new king plotted to kill King Sejo and return the throne to King Danjong. However, their plan was exposed, and as a result, Seong was tortured and executed. The six officials, including Seong, who were executed by King Sejo are called the Six Martyred Ministers.

해설문

국문

유허비(遺墟碑)란 선현의 자취가 있는 곳에 그를 추모하기 위해 세운 비(碑)를 말한다.

이 비는 성삼문의 유허지에 관해 기록하고 있다. 유허비의 전면에는 선생이 홍주 적동리(현 홍북읍 노은리)에서 태어난 사실과 사육신의 절의, 유허비가 세워진 과정 등이 기록되어 있다.

후면에는 조선 현종 13년(1672)에 선생의 신주(神主)가 인왕산 기슭에서 발견된 사실과 그것을 이곳으로 옮기는 과정, 사당 건립, 사육신의 신주 봉안, ‘녹운’이라는 이름으로 사액(임금이 사당이나 서원에 이름을 지어서 새긴 액자를 내리던 일)된 내용과 ‘노은’으로의 명칭 변경, 제사를 지내기 위해 조정에서 토지를 내려주었던 사실 등이 기록되어 있다.

When in 1455 King Danjong’s (r. 1452-1455) throne was usurped by his uncle King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), Seong together with others opposing the new king plotted to kill King Sejo and return the throne to King Danjong. However, their plan was exposed, and as a result, Seong was tortured and executed. The six officials, including Seong, who were executed by King Sejo are called the Six Martyred Ministers.

The inscription on the front was written by Song Si-yeol in 1668. It records Seong's birthplace as Noeun-ri, the loyalty of the Six Martyred Ministers, and the history of this stele.

The inscription on the back was written by Yun Bong-gu in 1744. It records that Seong’s ancestral tablet discovered at Inwangsan Mountain was relocated here in 1672 and that the shrine was established to enshrine the ancestral tablets of the Six Martyred Ministers.

The pavilion housing the stele was built in 1936.

영문 해설 내용

이 비는 조선시대의 충신 성삼문(1418-1456)을 기리는 것으로 1745년에 세워졌다.

성삼문은 수양대군이 조카 단종을 폐하고 왕위에 오르는 것에 반대하였고, 단종을 복위시키려 모의했다고 죽임을 당한 사육신의 한 사람이다.

비석 앞면의 비문은 1668년 송시열이 지었고, 성삼문이 노은리에서 태어난 사실과 사육신의 절의, 유허비를 세우게 된 과정 등을 기록하고 있다.

뒷면의 비문은 1744년 윤봉구가 썼다. 1672년 성삼문의 신주가 인왕산 기슭에서 발견되어 이곳으로 옮겼으며, 사당을 건립하고 사육신의 신주를 봉안한 일 등을 기록하고 있다.

비각은 1936년에 지은 것이다.
