국문
설악산 천연보호구역은 총 면적 173,744,122㎡로 태백산맥의 북부에 위치하고 있어서 북으로는 금강산을 거쳐 북한의 고원지대로 통하고, 남으로는 오대산․태백산을 거쳐 차령산맥․소백산맥과 연결된다.
천연보호구역 내의 식물은 약 1,013종의 식물이 분포하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 주로 신갈나무, 당단풍나무, 졸참나무, 서어나무 등의 활엽수림과 소나무, 잣나무, 분비나무 등의 침엽수림이 섞여 숲을 이룬다. 그 밖에 금강배나무, 금강봄맞이, 금강소나무, 등대시호, 만리화, 눈설악주목, 설악아구장나무, 설악금강초롱, 솜다리 등 특산물 65종, 눈측백 노랑만병초, 난쟁이붓꽃, 난사초, 한계령풀 등 희귀식물 56종이 보고되고 있다.
천연보호구역 내의 동물은 1,562종이 보고되어 있는데 이 가운데 반달가슴곰, 사향노루, 산양, 수달, 하늘다람쥐, 황조롱이, 붉은배새매, 열목어, 어름치 등은 별도의 천연기념물로 지정되어 있다.
설악산 천연보호구역은 특별히 보존해야 할 지질·지형 및 동·식물 자원이 풍부하며, 경치가 매우 아름답다. 또한 전통 사찰 등 많은 문화유산들을 지닌 우리나라를 대표하는 산의 하나로 설악산 전체를 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

Seoraksan Mountain Natural Reserve
Seoraksan Mountain Natural Reserve spans over 173.7 ㎢, across the Inje, Yangyang, and Sokcho areas in Gangwon-do Province. It is located in the northern part of the Taebaek Mountain Range, which stretches along the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, beginning in the highlands at the northern border of North Korea, then passing through Geumgangsan, Seoraksan, Odaesan, and Taebaeksan Mountains, and then onto the Charyeong and Sobaek Mountain Ranges at the southern end of the peninsula.
About 1,013 species of plants inhabit this natural reserve, including broad-leaf trees, such as Mongolian oak, Korean maple, Korana oak, and hornbeam, and needle-leaf trees, such as pine tree, pinenut tree, and Khingan fir. In addition, 65 kinds of specialty products and 56 kinds of rare plants also grow in this mountain.
There are also 1,562 species of animals which have been found in this reserve. Among these, many have been designated as Korea’s natural monuments, such as Asiatic black bear, musk deer, long-tailed goral, Eurasian otter, Siberian flying squirrel, common kestrel, grey frog hawk, Manchurian trout, and Korea spotted barbel.
Seoraksan Mountain Natural Reserve was designated as Natural Monument No. 171 because of its diverse geological and topographical features, animal and plant resources, beautiful landscapes, and various cultural heritages such as traditional Buddhist temples.
