These 25 statues enshrined in Myeongbujeon Hall depict a Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva triad, the Ten Underworld Kings, and their retinue. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, or the Bodhisattva of Great Vows, took on the responsibility of rescuing unfortunate beings from hell and vowed to postpone Buddhahood until all beings are saved from the world of suffering. The Ten Underworld Kings preside over the judgment of the dead. Therefore, Myeongbujeon Hall symbolizes the realm of the dead and is used as a venue for consolation ceremonies for the spirits of the dead.

The hall was built in 1870 with the patronage of Queen Sinjeong (1809-1890). It is said that at the time, the royal court ordered that the finest statue of Ksitigarbha in the country be found and enshrined in this hall. And as a result, the statues from Gangseosa Temple in Hwanghae-do Province (in today’s North Korea) were moved here.

Ksitigarbha is seated in the center of the altar with the sage monk Daoming and Demon King Wudu to his left and right. Daoming was a Chinese monk who is said to have accidentally experienced the afterlife and returned to the world of the living to teach about what he had seen. Demon King Wudu is believed to expel the evil from people’s hearts. On either side of the altar are the statues of the Ten Underworld Kings, judges, underworld messengers, and child attendants. At the far left and far right are statues of wrathful guardians.

The Ksitigarbha statue was made in 1649 by the sculptor-monk Yeongcheol. The statue features nicely balanced proportions and pronounced naturally curving creases on Ksitigarbha’s clothes. The large nose and tiny mouth of this statue are characteristic of Yeongcheol’s work.
