The history of Hwagyesa Temple begins with Bodeokam Hermitage which was built nearby during the early period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) by Monk Tanmun (900-975). In 1522, during the Joseon period (1392-1910), Monk Sinwol moved (and expanded?) the hermitage (to the current location?) renaming it to Hwagyesa Temple. The name of temple can be interpreted as “the three beauties: the beauty of a flower, beauty of a stream, and the beauty of a temple.”

All buildings of the temple burnt down in 1618. They were built anew in 1619 on the funds provided by the family of Deokheung Daewongun, prince regent of King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608) and the seventh son of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544). As the temple went into disrepair, in 1866, it was a renovated on the donations made by Heungseon Daewongun, prince regent and de facto ruler during the early period of the reign of King Gojong (1863-1907). Daeungjeon Hall, Gwaneumjeon Hall, and Siwangjeon Hall underwent renovation* in 1870, 1876, and 1878, respectively. During the reign of King Heonjong (r. 1834-1849), Queen Shinjeong (1808-1890)* often visited the temple, which is why people also called it "the court’s temple".
