궁촌리 음나무는 높이 17.5m, 둘레 6.4m의 큰 나무로, 줄기가 크게 두 갈래로 자랐다. 나이가 1,000여 년에 이르는 크고 오래된 나무이다. 마을에서 수호신으로 모시며 주변에 돌담을 쌓고 금줄을 쳐 보호하고 있다. 주변에 있는 다른 나무들도 제법 오래되어 옛날 집터로 보이는데, 전해지는 말로는 이 나무가 있는 곳이 고려 공양왕이 유배되어 살던 집의 뜰이었다고 한다.
봄이 되어 이 나무에 잎이 필 때 동쪽 가지에서 먼저 피면 영동 지방에, 북서쪽 가지에서 먼저 피면 영서 지방에 풍년이 든다고 점친다. 마을 사람들은 해마다 정월과 단오에 이 나무에 제를 올려 마을의 안녕을 빈다. 특히 단오에 큰 잔치를 벌여 널뛰기, 그네뛰기, 농악 놀이 등을 즐긴다.
