갈전리 당숲은 약 300여 년 전 영양 남씨 조상들이 이 마을에 터를 잡으면서 형성된 마을 숲으로 예전에는 느릅나무 등 다양한 종류의 나무가 숲을 이루고 있었다.
현재는 보호수로 지정된 음나무, 졸참나무와 단풍나무, 느릅나무 등이 군락을 이루어 당숲을 형성하고 있고, 그 속에는 성황당이 있어 마을 사람들이 매년 음력 정월 대보름날 마을의 안녕과 풍요를 기원하는 제례를 지내고 있다. 이 당숲은 오랜 세월동안 조상들의 관심과 보살핌으로 지켜온 마을 숲으로 민속적·생태학적 자료로서의 보존 가치가 높아 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

Tutelary Grove in Galjeon-ri, Samcheok
A tutelary grove, called dangsup in Korean, is a collection of trees which have the divinity to protect a village, according to local folk belief.
It is said that the trees in this grove were planted by members of the Yeongyang Nam Clan who settled in this village in the mid-16th century. Currently, there are prickly castor oil trees, Konara oaks, palmate maples, and Wilson's elms.
Locals perform a ritual at the shrine in the grove on the first full moon of the lunar year, wishing for peace and prosperity of the village.

당숲이란 마을의 수호신으로 신성하게 여기는 숲을 말한다.
갈전리의 당숲은 16세기 중반 영양남씨 조상들이 이 마을에 터를 잡으면서 형성되었다. 음나무, 졸참나무, 단풍나무, 느릅나무 등이 군락을 이루고 있다.
매년 정월대보름에는 마을 사람들이 숲의 성황당에서 마을의 안녕과 풍요를 기원하는 제례를 지내고 있다.
