삼정지는 1480년에 처음 만들어진 인공연못이다. 면적은 3만㎡이며 저수능력은 73,800톤에 달한다. 못을 처음 만들 당시 세 골짜기에서 흘러내리는 물이 모여들었다고 해서 붙여진 이름이다. 못이 2개로 이루어져 있어서 ‘쌍둥이못’이라고도 한다.<br />

연못 가운데에는 작은 섬이 있는데, 자인 지역의 수호신인 한장군이 탔던 말의 무덤이라고 전해진다. 마을의 전설에 따르면, 신라말 고려초에 왜적이 침범하자 한 장군이 꾀를 내어 여자로 변장하고 누이동생과 함께 꽃으로 화려하게 장식한 관을 쓰고 춤을 추어 왜적을 무찔렀다고 한다. 이후 마을 주민들은 장군을 기리는 사당을 짓고 해마다 단오날에 제사를 지냈으며, 제사 행렬이 이곳 말무덤을 반드시 들렀다고 한다.<br />
