Samamdondae Outpost

An outpost, called dondae in Korean, was a small camp set up at a distance from a main military station. It was used to monitor the enemies’ movements and to stand guard against unauthorized intrusions and surprise attacks.

In 1679, during the Joseon dynasty, 48 outposts were constructed in Ganghwado Island, and a local magistrate, Yun I-je (1628-1701), oversaw the construction. Six additional outposts were built later. These outposts were constructed on the coastal upland of Ganghwado, with artillery emplacement surrounded by high stone walls.

Samamdondae was one of the outposts of Jeongpobo Fort. It has four artillery emplacements inside its stone walls which form a circular shape, 121 m in circumference. There are traces of a low wall with 55 battlements above the main structure which shielded soldiers during battle. Its entrance is located on the northern side of the structure.
