In 1679, during the Joseon dynasty, Minister of Military Affairs, Kim Seok-ju (1634-1684), recommended the construction of military outposts in Ganghwado Island to King Sukjong. A local magistrate, Yun I-je (1628-1701), oversaw the construction of 48 outposts. Five additional outposts were added from 1690 to 1696. Samamdondae was an outpost of Jeongpobo Fort. It has four artillery emplacements inside its stone walls which form a circular shape 121 m in circumference. There are traces of a low wall with 55 battlements above the main structure. Its entrance is located on the northern side of the structure.

해설문

국문

돈대란 적의 움직임을 살피거나 공격에 대비하기 위하여 감시가 쉬운 곳에 설치하는 초소이다. 이 돈대는 숙종 5년(1679) 강화유수 윤이제가 병조판서 김석주의 명을 받아 어영군 8천여 명을 동원하여 축조하였다. 둥근 원형으로 쌓여 있으며 대포를 올려놓는 받침대가 4곳에 설치되어 있다. 성 위로 낮게 쌓은 담이 55개가 있었으나 지금은 모두 사라지고 그 흔적만 남아 있다. 돈대 안에는 네모꼴의 화약고가 있었다고 한다. 북쪽에 출입구가 나 있다.
