This academy was founded in 1461 to honor Mun Ik-jeom (1329-1398), a civil official and scholar of the late period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392), whose tomb is located about 220 m to the southeast of the academy entrance. The academy was royally chartered in 1787 but was demolished in 1871 when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. The academy began to be rebuilt in 1975, starting with its shrine, named Samusa. Currently, the complex consists of a main gate, two dormitories, Sinansajae Hall, a lecture hall, and the shrine.
