해설문
국문
신중이란 불교에서 불법을 수호하는 신들로, 신중도는 인도의 재래적인 토속신들을 그려 신앙의 대상으로 삼은 그림이다. 주로 법당에서 부처를 모셔놓는 불단의 왼쪽에 걸어놓는다.
산청 대원사 신중도는 가로 124㎝, 세로 145㎝의 크기로, 부처의 가르침과 진리를 지키는 금강신장을 비롯한 무리들을 표현하였다. 그림의 위쪽에는 모란꽃을 든 제석천*을 중심으로 따르는 이들을 두고, 아래쪽에는 투구를 쓰고 두 손바닥을 모으고 있는 위태천**을 중심으로 무리들을 배치하였다.
화기***를 통해 조선 정조 18년(1794)에 그린 것을 알 수 있으며, 신과 보살 등의 얼굴 모습이 18세기 불교그림의 특징을 잘 나타낸다.

영문 해설 내용
이 불화는 부처의 가르침을 지키는 수호신 총 24위를 그린 그림이다. 1794년 승려화가인 설훈, 덕민, 언보가 그렸다.
가로 124㎝, 세로 145㎝의 크기로, 화면 중앙에는 모란꽃을 든 제석천과 투구를 쓰고 두 손을 모으고 있는 위태천을 배치하였다. 제석천은 신들의 왕인 인드라에서 유래하였고, 위태천은 힌두교 신화에 나오는 군신(軍神)에서 유래하였다. 제석천과 위태천 주변을 보살, 천인, 천동과 여러 호법신들이 둘러싸고 있다.
전체적으로 적색이 많이 사용되었으며, 위태천의 투구와 무기, 호법신 주변의 구름 등에 금색을 칠하여 화려하면서도 밝은 느낌을 준다.
