해설문

국문

부산 좌수영성지 곰솔은 높이 23.6m, 둘레 4.50m로 소나뭇과에 해당하며, 천연기념물로 지정되던 당시 나이가 400년 정도로 추정되었다. 소나무의 겨울눈*은 대개 붉은 색을 띠는 데 반해 곰솔은 회백색인 것이 특징이다. 이와 같은 특성을 지닌 곰솔은 바닷가를 따라 자라기 때문에‘해송’으로도 부르며, 줄기 껍질의 색이 소나무보다 검다고 해서 ‘흑송’으로 부르기도 한다.

조선시대에 이곳 수영구에는 경상좌도 수군절도사영성(慶尙左道 水軍節道使營城)**이라는 병영***이 있었다. 전설에 따르면 그 당시 이곳의 군사들이 이 나무를 군영을 보호해주는 신성한 존재라고 생각하여, 나무에게 자신이 무사하기를 기원했다고 한다.

부산 좌수영성지 곰솔은 오랜 세월 동안 조상들의 관심과 보살핌 가운데 살아온 나무로 민속적·문화적 자료로서의 보존가치가 높아 천연기념물로 지정·보호하고 있다.
