Cornerstones at the West Gate of Busanjinjiseong Fortress

These are two cornerstones of either side of the west gate of Busanjinjiseong Fortress.

During the Japanese invasions of 1592-159), Japanese troops occupied this area and constructed a Japanese-style stone fortress. After the war, the Joseon Navy renovated the Japanese fortress and used it as their headquarters.

These stones were placed with an aim to emphasize the importance of national defense and warn against a Japanese invasion. Each stone bears an inscription, which reads, “This is the southernmost border, which is the throat of a country.” and “The west gate is a padlock of the country.” These inscriptions imply the strategic importance that Busan, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, holds in terms of national defense.

This fortress was once demolished during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). At that time, the two stones were moved to a nearby elementary school. They were taken back to the current location, when the west gate of Busanjinjiseong Fortress was rebuilt in 1974.
