해설문

국문

봉암서원은 망암 변이중(望庵 邊以中, 1546~1611) 선생을 주향*으로 하고, 윤진(尹軫), 변윤중(邊允中), 변경윤(邊慶胤), 변덕윤(邊德胤), 변휴(邊烋), 변치명(邊致明) 등 여섯 분을 종향**하면서 그 분들의 학문과 정신을 추모하고 제자를 가르쳤던 교육기관이다. 서원은 조선 숙종 23년(1697)에 최초로 건립되어, 조선 고종 5년(1868)에 서원ㆍ사우 훼철령으로 헐리게 되었다. 1981년에 전라남도 기념물로 지정되었고, 1984년에 서원이 복원되어 지금에 이르고 있다.

망암 변이중 선생은 이곳 봉암마을에서 태어났으며, 28세 때 과거에 합격하여 호조ㆍ이조 좌랑(佐郞), 형조ㆍ예조 정랑(正郎), 군기ㆍ종부 시정(寺正)과 황해ㆍ평안도 도사(都事), 풍기ㆍ함안 군수 등을 두루 거쳤다. 임진왜란과 정유재란 동안 전라도 소모사(召募使)와 조도어사(調度御使)를 두 번, 독운사(督運使)를 세 번 역임하여 병력, 군량, 무기 등을 모집하고 수송하는 중요한 일을 했다.

특히, 무기를 만드는 국방과학의 선구자로서 왜군의 조총에 맞설 무기인 화차 3백대를 제작하여 행주산성의 권율 장군에게 보내졌고, 그 결과 적은 병력으로 왜군을 무찌르는 행주대첩을 이루는데 결정적으로 기여했다.

대문 격인 외삼문을 들어서면 앞쪽에 교육공간인 성경당이 있고, 뒤쪽에 제사공간인 종앙사가 위치해 있다. 성경당과 내삼문 사이에는 유생들이 숙식하던 곳인 훈덕재, 경의재가 위치해 있다.
