해설문

국문

석가모니불의 일생을 여덟 개의 장면으로 구분하여 표현한 그림을 팔상도(捌相圖)라고 하고 팔상도를 모시고 있는 전각을 팔상전(捌相殿)이라고 한다.

법주사 팔상전은 법주사 창건 당시에 세운 것으로 전해지며, 임진왜란 때 완전히 소실된 것을 선조 38년(1605)부터 시작하여 인조 4년(1626)에 벽암대사(碧巖大師)가 주관하여 다시 세웠다.

건물은 2단의 석조기단 위에 세워졌는데 기단의 각 면 중앙에 돌계단이 있다. 기단과 계단은 통일신라 때의 것이다.

평면은 정방형으로 1, 2층은 정면, 측면 5칸, 3, 4층은 3칸, 5층은 2칸으로 올라갈수록 너비가 급격히 줄어들어 전체적으로 매우 안정감 있는 모습이다.

공포의 짜임은 1층부터 4층까지는 기둥 위에만 공포를 짠 주심포식이고 5층은 기둥사이에 공포를 짜 올린 다포식이다.

지붕은 사모지붕이며 위에 올려진 상륜부는 조선시대의 것으로 가장 완벽하게 남아 있다.

내부 가구는 5층 건물 전체를 통과하는 심주가 중앙에 세워져 있다. 심주의 4면에는 각 2폭씩 8폭의 팔상도가 있고 그 앞으로 4면에 열반상을 포함한 삼존불상을 각각 배치했다.

법주사 팔상전은 우리나라에 현존하는 유일한 목조탑으로서 그 건축적 가치가 크다.

영문 해설 내용

팔상전은 석가모니의 일생을 여덟 개의 장면으로 나누어 그린 그림을 모시는 전각이다.

법주사 팔상전은 현재 한국에 남아있는 유일한 목탑이다. 553년 법주사 창건 당시에 처음 세워졌던 것으로 전해지며, 임진왜란 때 완전히 소실되었다가 1605년부터 1626년에 걸쳐 다시 세웠다. 현재의 건물은 1968년에 해체, 수리한 것이다.

돌로 쌓은 2단의 기단 위에 세워졌으며, 기단의 각 면 중앙에 돌계단이 있다. 기단과 계단은 모두 통일신라시대에 만든 것이다.

탑의 내부에는 중앙에 거대한 기둥을 세우고 그 주위에 4개의 기둥을 세워 건물 전체를 지탱하게 하였다. 4개의 기둥을 서로 연결하여 벽을 설치하였고, 각 벽면에 2폭씩 팔상도를 걸었으며 팔상도 앞에는 불상을 배치했다. 네 불상 중 하나는 석가모니가 열반하는 모습을 상징하는 와불상이다.

건물 꼭대기에는 조선시대에 만들어진 철제 머리장식이 온전하게 남아있다.
