국문

신라의 전형적인 팔각석등의 대표적인 양식으로 조각수법으로 보아 혜공왕 대에 진표율사가 법주사를 다시 고쳐지을 때의 작품으로 추정된다. 높이 3.9m에 이르는 대형 석등으로 화사석은 8각으로 4면에 창을, 나머지 면에는 사천왕상을 배치하였고, 지붕돌 정상에는 보주를 받치고 있는 받침이 남아 있다. 사천왕이란 불교에서 수미산을 중심으로 사방을 지키는 수호신으로 동쪽의 지국천왕, 서쪽의 광목천왕, 남쪽의 증장천왕, 북쪽의 다문천왕을 뜻한다.

This octagonal stone lantern measures 3.9 m in height and is presumed to have been built around the 8th century during the Unified Silla period (668-935). Between the four openings on the light chamber, depictions of the Four Guardian Kings are engraved. It is said that the Four Guardian Kings, who once were the deities of ancient India, eventually turned to Sakyamuni Buddha and became the guardians of his teachings.

영문 해설 내용

석등은 불전에 등불을 공양하기 위해 세우는 구조물이다. 보통 주불전이나 불탑 앞에 세워진다.

높이가 3.9m에 달하는 이 대형 팔각 석등은 통일신라시대인 8세기 경에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 연꽃무늬가 새겨진 받침돌, 팔각 기둥, 네 곳에 창이 뚫린 화사석, 지붕돌, 머리장식 일부로 이루어져 있다.

화사석의 창 사이에는 사천왕이 새겨져 있다. 사천왕은 원래 고대 인도의 신이었는데, 석가모니불에 귀의한 후 불법을 지키는 수호신이 되었다고 한다.
