He was well-versed not only in Buddhist scriptures, but also in Confucian texts such as the Four Books and Three Classics, and was also proficient in Sanskrit and Tibetan. He was trusted by King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) and became the supervisor of the project involving the translation of Buddhist scriptures into vernacular Korean using the Hangeul alphabet newly developed by the king. Sinmi also reconstructed several temples on royal order, and after he reconstructed Bokcheonam Hermitage in 1449, he devoted himself to meditation and teaching here. In 1464, King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), who respected Sinmi and considered him his teacher, paid him a visit here to hold a Buddhist ceremony.

국문

수암화상탑은 조선 전기의 고승 혜각대사 신미대상(1403∼1480)의 승탑이다. 신미대사는 세종의 훈민정음 창제작업에도 깊이 관여하였다고 알려져 있으며, 훈민정음 창제 이후 불경 국역 작업을 주도하였다. 세조는 신미대사가 주지로 있는 속리산 복천사를 방문하여 3일간 법회를 열기도 하였다. 수암화상탑은 고려시대 팔각원당형 승탑을 계승한 유물로 전체 높이는 3m에 이른다. 기단 부분은 상·중·하대로 형성되었는데 모두 8각이며 별다른 조각이나 장식이 없다. 몸돌 부분은 원형이며 곡선이 부드러우며 안정감을 준다. 지붕돌은 낙수면(洛水面)이 급경사를 이루고 있고, 정상에는 보주가 돌출되어 있다. 승탑 기단 측면에 「수암화상탑 성화 16년 8월일 세움」 이란 글자가 음각되어 있어 정확한 건립연대(1480년)를 알 수 있는 유물이다.

영문 해설 내용

조선시대의 승려 신미(1403-1480)의 승탑이다. 승탑은 스님의 사리나 유골을 모셔 놓은 일종의 무덤이다.

신미는 법주사에서 출가하여 승려가 되었다. 불경은 물론 사서삼경을 두루 익혔으며, 산스크리트어와 티베트어에도 능통하였다. 세종(재위 1418-1450)의 총애를 받아 불경 언해 작업을 주도하였으며, 왕명으로 여러 사찰을 중창하였다. 1449년에 복천암을 중창한 후에는 수행과 후학 지도에 전념하였다. 세조(재위 1455-1468)가 신미를 존경하여 스승으로 여겼으며, 1464년에는 복천암에 행차하여 대법회를 열기도 했다.

이 승탑은 1480년에 세워졌다. 3단의 팔각 기단, 둥근 몸돌, 지붕돌, 구슬 모양의 머리장식으로 이루어져 있다. 건립연도와 승탑의 주인 이름이 각각 기단과 몸돌에 새겨진 것 외에는 별다른 장식이 없다. 전체 높이는 3m이다.
