The hermitage underwent several reconstructions throughout the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. Following the renovation of the hermitage by the eminent monk Sinmi in 1449, King Sejo (r. 1455-1468), who considered Sinmi his teacher, visited this place in 1464, which made the hermitage widely known. In 1735, the hermitage burnt down and was reconstructed in 1803.

There are to stupas inside the hermitage complex, which belong to the eminent monks Sinmi and Hakjo, two important figures in the hermitage’s history. They were built in 1480 and 1514, respectively, and are designated as Treasure No. 1416 and Treasure No. 1418.

The hermitage is home to four other tangible cultural heritages of Chungcheongbuk-do Province, namely, Geungnakbojeon Hall (No. 298), Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad (No. 305), Buddhist Painting of Guardian Deities (No. 306), and Painting of the Three World Buddhas (No. 307). The Buddha triad and the two paintings are enshrined in the Geungnakbojeon Hall.

Geungnakbojeon Hall is the main worship hall of Bokcheonam Hermitage. It is unknown when the hall was originally built, but after it burnt down in 1733, it was rebuilt in 1735 and since then underwent a few repairs. The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad consists of Amitabha (the Buddha of the Western Paradise) in the center, flanked by Avalokitesvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion) and Mahasthamaprapta (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Strength). The triad is presumed to have been made during the reconstruction of the hall in 1735. The Painting of the Three World Buddhas was painted in 1909 and depicts Sakyamuni Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha), and Amitabha Buddha each of whom represents the present, the past, and the future Buddha. The Buddhist Painting of Guardian Deities was done in 1795 by Singyeom, the acclaimed monk-painter of the late 18th – early 19th century.
