Peddlers were merchants who traveled across the country selling goods at markets. In the 19th century, peddlers from different areas started forming unions licensed by the state that would protect their rights, enhance cooperation, and manage the markets.

보령 원홍주등육군상무사 임소는 지역 시장 운영을 관리하던 조선 시대 건축물이다. 보부상은 조선 후기 시장의 발달과 함께 등장하여 지방 오일장을 중심으로 상단을 조직하여 활동한 상인들로 지방 유통 경제 발전에 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 충청도 서해안 지역에서 활동하였던 보부상단은 원홍주등육군상무사, 저산팔읍상무사, 예덕상무사 등이 있는데, 이곳은 원홍주등육군상무사의 홍도원 임소이다.

1851년에 홍성 보령 청양 대흥 결성 등 다섯 고을의 오읍상계(商稧)가 조직되었는데, 이 조직은 1901년에 오천군이 설치되면서 원홍주등육군상무사로 이름을 바꾸고 중앙 상무사 조직에 편입되면서 홍성 보령 청양 대흥 결성 오천의 6개 군의 시장을 관할하였다. 이들은 관할하는 시장에 임소(任所)를 설치하고 시장을 운영하였으며 이를 접장接長이 지휘하였다.

이 홍도원 임소는 광천 옹암에 사는 보상노인(褓商老人) 조덕중이, 죽어서도 돌볼 사람이 없는 보부상들을 위하여 70평생 상업으로 모은 전답과 산을 기부하여 보부상들의 공동묘지를 만들도록 한 것이 계기가 되어 만들어졌다. 임소의 건물은 언제 처음 세워졌는지 알 수 없으나 건물 중건기에 의하면 1932년에 중건되었고, 임소, 휴식처, 묘사로 사용되었다.

지금은 한식일에 제사를 지내는 묘사의 기능만 하고 있다. 원래는 초가였으나 함석으로 개량하였고 현재 안채 및 부속채 2동이 남아 있다. 현재까지 명맥이 이어져 오고 있는 원홍주등육군상무사 보부상단의 활동을 보여 주는 매우 보기 드문 유적이다.
